The Daniels Project.
Authorities estimate that about 2.1 million inmates - both men and women - have children struggling to cope outside the prison walls.
Frequently, these children live in foster homes, or with an un-incarcerated parent or relative who is facing severe financial and social strains.
The social impact of so many children with parents in prison is devastating, especially in low-income communities. It fosters an environment where children don't have role models and may fall into the same bad habits of their parents.
Based on current statistics provided by the National Resource Center on Children and Families of the Incarcerated, many children of incarcerated parents exhibit symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that has profound consequences for them. Many suffer feelings of shame, grief, guilt, abandonment, and anger; that in far too many cases leads to social stigma, disconnection from parent, and poor school performance.
In Manatee County there is a faith-based partnership that addresses the needs of the silent victims:
The Daniels Project.
