2 CONT According to Frances, Frank wanted to be a farmer.  This is what brought him to Iowa where h
2 CONC e met Amy.  During WW 1 he worked a farm for a man who went to war. Frances was born in Iowa
2 CONC , but for some reason Frank brought his family to Illinois where his father and younger broth
2 CONC er Maurice lived.  I remember he always had a garden, and loved growing things.  He worked fo
2 CONC r Electro-Motive Division of GM from the time it opened until he died.  He was a "Roving Form
2 CONC an" which meant he could do everything in the shop.  One of the last memories I have of him w
2 CONC as grinding the valves on his Packard.  --  I was 11 when he died. FEF

2 CONT Amy was quite a poet, she had poems published in the Valley Times newspaper, the Streamline
2 CONC r (Electro-Motive newsletter) and several other publications. During the 1950's she wrote poe
2 CONC ms for a Chicago Television program called "Dear Gearldine".  It was a puppet show and they w
2 CONC ould read mothers poems on the air.

2 CONT Judy Matheson had some of Amy's poems published and each child and grandchild were given a co
2 CONC py.  I still have mine, and I have all the originals that still exist.  Unfortunately, many w
2 CONC ere lost years in the 30's or 40's when Amy tried to get a "girl" to type them.  The girl wou

1 NOTE Thomas was a farmer and a railroad employee with the Milwalkee road.  A Methodist, he lived i
2 CONC n Jamaica, Dedham, Bagley, and Scranton, Iowa.   I remember him as a white haired man who spo
2 CONC ke softly and was interesting to a young child.  He died when I was 15.  FEF

2 CONT From Theo's history: "Tom wasn't much of a farmer, though he tried.  Both Tom and Daze were c
2 CONC rack shots with a rifle, and spent a goof deal of time shooting at the hevy pine front door o
2 CONC f their house.  I might add that it was an old house about to be torn down to make way for mo
2 CONC re farm ground.  Tom had a rifle range at one time, and showed off his skill by lying down o
2 CONC n his back using a mirror to sight with.  After the farming stint, Tom worked for the Milwauk
2 CONC ee Railroad.  He made more money taking and developing pictures than he did on the railroad
2 CONC , which for years, paid a dollar a day.  They lived in such Iowa towns as Dedham, Earling, Ba
2 CONC gley, De Witt, and Jamaica.
2 CONT Tom was not a drinker, mainly because the one time he was loaded, he made a fool of himself
2 CONC .  He and a fellow 'watched' the likker in a cellar while an auction was being held.  As th
2 CONC e sale neared it's end, they poked their heads out of the cellar to hear that only 2 items re
2 CONC mained.  They both yelled, 'I'll give $20.'  The other fellow had bought a spavined horse, To
2 CONC m, a grindstone."

1 NOTE From Theo's history:  Daisy had "Mother wit" -- the kind of know how that is inherent.  She c
2 CONC ould do almost anything, from playing a harmonica, chording on the old organ to making the fa
2 CONC mily clothes, not by pattern, but looking at the pictures in the catalogues.  Daisy had a bre
2 CONC ad business in Bagley, churned butter for the "kids" to deliver to the bigwigs.  One time sh
2 CONC e mentioned that she would liked to have been a milliner ... She's have made a good one.  He
2 CONC r one saying -- and she followed it, "If you can't say something good about a person, keep st
2 CONC ill."  The girls at least were raised on her adage, "I could not love thee half so well ha
2 CONC d I not loved honor more."  Dunno what she told the boys.  Paddling was done-- with the butte
2 CONC r paddle, pancake turner, or the razor strop.  The old strop lost its handles long ago, but i
2 CONC t's still around.

2 CONT    Daisy had heart trouble all of her adult years at least.  Manyu a time when the older chil
2 CONC dren were small, she'd conk out -- to be put to bed and given a strychnien (30-30) tablet whi
2 CONC ch she kept on top of the book rack, high above anyone's head.
2 CONT    Daisy loved sunrises and sunsets, and often commented, "when I die, I hope it's a dark day
2 CONC , because I don't want to miss the sunrise." March 31, 1940 was dark and raw.

1 NOTE From Theo's history:  Amy married Leonard in Wisconsin.  Evidently, they moved to Humboldt Co
2 CONC unty a short time later, for it was there that their first child was born, Daisy Caroline i
2 CONC n 1874.  By 1877, they had returned to Wisconsin, and were still there in 1882.  They moved t
2 CONC o a farm north of Jamaica, and lived there until 1893.  Amy's hair was dark red.  She had mar
2 CONC ried at 17 -- was the "funnin' kind" -- wrote a bit of poetry -- let the "kids cut up" when t
2 CONC he stern dad was gone.  When Leonard wasn't home, they laughed at mealtime, stirred butter i
2 CONC n their molasses, a 'NO-NO."  Grandfather was on the "stiff" side.  He bought boys shoes fo
2 CONC r his only girl as he did for the boys.  One pair pinched and "Daze" filled them with shelle
2 CONC d corn and pumped them full of water.
2 CONT  She misjudged the amount of corn, and had to wear the split shoes anyway. Grandad always mad
2 CONC e what they called icecream.  When it got really cold, and it did, he'd put fresh milk in a l
2 CONC ittle bucket, cut and peal a willow switch, add a little vanilla and sugar, take the bucket o
2 CONC ut to the north side of the house where the wind whooshed good, and beat the milk until it fo
2 CONC amed and froze. M-M-M-GOOD!
2 CONT    Daze didn't care too much about Daisy for a name, but disliked CAR-LINE even more, so whe
2 CONC n ever anyone asked her what her middle name was, she told them, "Captain--because I'm a dam
2 CONC n Yankee, you know."
2 CONT Amy died at age 33 of what was called consumption in 1890.

1 NOTE From the History of Green County, Wisconsin -- Page 655 "Milo Smith is a native of Bradford C
2 CONC o., Pa, born November 12, 1823.
2 CONT He was reared upon a farm, and in 1844, came to the Territory of Wisconsin and located in Laf
2 CONC ayette County where he remained about a year.  He was taken sick here, with febver and ague
2 CONC , and was unable to do any work for about a year.  He next went to Lafayette County and enter
2 CONC ed land near Fayette and engaged in farming.  March 13, 1850 he was married to Caroline Kelly
2 CONC , daughter of Samuel and Mary (Henderson) Kelly, and settled in Moscow, Iowa County, where h
2 CONC e operated a carding machine five years.  He then moved to Mitchell County, Iowa, where he en
2 CONC tered 200 acres of land, and lived there two and a half years.
2 CONT  He then sold out and went to Grundy Co., Missouri, remaining there three and a half years, a
2 CONC fter which he returned to Green Co., and settled near Monroe.  In 1865 he rented a farm on se
2 CONC ction 34, of the town of Adams, and in 1866, purchased his present farm, in another quarter o
2 CONC f the same section.  Mr. and Mrs Smith have nine children -- Mary, Joel, Miranda, Amy, Ella
2 CONC , Lizzie, Kate, Esther A, and John.

1 NOTE    It is a wonder that the file of Fielding Robert could be found, let alone kept straight
2 CONC .  He was listed as Fielden R. Beddow, F.R. Bedoe, Fielding, Felden, Feldon, Fieldon, Feilden
2 CONC , Fielden Beddon, etc.  Anyway, his enlistment shows that he was 37  years old, 5 feet 5 inch
2 CONC es, complexion light, hair brown. He enlisted August 15, 1862, in Wheatland, Iowa, was assign
2 CONC ed to Company I, 26th Regiment Iowa Infantry under Captain William Nickels, and was discharge
2 CONC d June 6, 1865.  He served as nurse on a hospital boat under the orders of Col. Milo Smith i
2 CONC n 1863.  His rheumatisim kept him from being able to continue on long marches.  He would as
2 CONC k his commanding officer how far they expected to go --- then drop out, build a fire to war
2 CONC m and loosen up, or find a haystack until he could hobble again.  Then through the night, h
2 CONC e would catch up with his company.  This may account for the fact that he spent a good deal o
2 CONC f his time as a cook and nurse in the Memphis Hospital.  Cataracts on both his eyes develope
2 CONC d during these war years.  'Tis said that he was given a whopppin' swig of whiskey, and whil
2 CONC e 4 men held him down, the doctor removed the cataracts. Following the operations on his eyes
2 CONC , "left the lids of his right eye uncontrollable by his will so that he has to raise it by hi
2 CONC s finger-- the sight of both eyes are very much impaired causing him much pain and inconvenie
2 CONC nce."

2 CONT     Fielding and Silva came to Iowa shortly after their marriage in 1849.  They farmed near W
2 CONC heatland, Iowa City, Carrollton, and Coon Rapids before moving near Jamacia, Iowa.

2 CONT    According to "Daze" [Daisy], Fielding was a rather nice old fellow, congenial, anyway.  Si
2 CONC lva was something else ... If you've a nasty tempered youngun, it's Silva showin' up.  She "l
2 CONC ooked forward to the day when Fielding would die and she'd be left in peace" ... Well, Fieldi
2 CONC ng did die, July 29/'96. She remarked the night of his funeral, "You know, I miss the old boy
2 CONC .  I never thought I would."
2 CONT    Silva had cancer of the toung -- in fact -- it ate clear through under her chin..  Her suf
2 CONC fering was great that last year.  She died at Tom and Daisy's home February 8, 1897.
2 CONT    Fielding Robert and Silva Jones Beddow are buried in the Old Carrollton Cemetery, near Gli
2 CONC dden, Iowa.
2 CONT    There some deeds in the Delaware Country probate court which seem to indicate that Silva w
2 CONC as the daughter of James and Jane Jones.
2 CONT    The 1850 Census gives James Jones as owning $2300 in land at that time.  He is listed as 5
2 CONC 7, his wife jane as 55, John 23, Alice 17.

2 CONC tary of Richland Township.

1 NOTE  From the Revolutionary War record of Thomas Beddow (Beddo):  "I was born
2 CONT  January 23, 1761, in Prince George County, Maryland, where I resided
2 CONT  during the revolution near Nottingham and in the direction from there
2 CONT  towards where the Federal City now is about 22 miles from Marlborough.
2 CONT  I was enrolled in the militia a year or two after the Declaration of
2 CONT  Independence.  A year or two after being enrolled was drafted or called
2 CONT  into actual service for nine months.  This was about the first of April;
2 CONT  I cannot recollect the year, but I think it was a year or two before the
2 CONT  taking of L. Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia.  I served under Capt.
2 CONT  Thomas and Lt. Jack Green (?).  This company to which I belonged,
2 CONT  [Truman] first mustered at a little town or place called Grubtown; and
2 CONT  one company the nearest to our permanent station a little below Hannah
2 CONT  Brown's Ferry on the Patuxent River in Maryland.  We were stationed here
2 CONT  with 2 or 3 other companies under the command of Col. Benjamin Skinner.
2 CONT  This place was near headquarters during my whole tour of nine months of
2 CONT  service.  During the whole time we were stationed there, the enemy was
2 CONT  hovering about us, and we were compelled to keep an active guard on
2 CONT  patrol.  While we were stationed at the Ferry, the enemy in the night
2 CONT  attacked, [?] Marlboro [?couldn't decipher] and plundered and burnt some
2 CONT  part of it.  We marched to the relief of this place, but the enemy had
2 CONT  made its retreat before we arrived there.  Some time before the attack
2 CONT  on [?] Marlboro, I was one night standing sentry at the Ferry.  The alarm
2 CONT  was given and all our sentries were called in to our station.  Our whole
2 CONT  force was mustered expecting an attack from the enemy.  At this time our
2 CONT  Lt. Green left his post and secreted himself in a hay marsh, until the
2 CONT  alarm was over.  For this conduct Lt. Green was afterwards tried by a
2 CONT  Court Marshal for cowardice, and was dismissed from the army.  After I
2 CONT  had served my tour of nine months I was discharged at our station near
2 CONT  the Ferry about the last of December.  Some time after the revolution I
2 CONT  left Prince Georges County and settled in Albemarle County, VA. near a
2 CONT  place called Port Republic about 11 miles from Charlotteville.  I resided
2 CONT  there until the month of August, 1828.  I went to Rockinham Co., and left
2 CONT  there in 1831.  When I left there and removed to the state of Ohio, I
2 CONT  settled in Delaware County, September of 1831."

2 CONT  The war record of Thomas Beddow also shows that August 1852, his widow,
2 CONT  Sarah applied for a widow's pension.  According to the report, Sarah was
2 CONT  then about ninety three years old.  Thomas had tied November 10, 1851.
2 CONT  He had received a pension in 1832, when he was 71.  She asked for a
2 CONT  continuance of the pension of $30 per year.  She stated that she married
2 CONT  Thomas in Prince George County, Maryland in 1777, the month and date she
2 CONT  could not recollect.  The pastor was one Reverend Thomas Cliggit (sp) of
2 CONT  the Protestant Episcopal Church.  She supplied affidavits since she had
2 CONT  no record of her marriage.

2 CONT  William, her son accompanied his mother, and declared that he was born
2 CONT  in 1780 -- the Bible page shows 1779 ... a census of 1850 shows 1781.

2 CONC m are living, Maurice of LaGrange and Frank of Western Springs.
