What is HTML?What is FTP?

Why do I need to know all this?

You don't - all you need to know is to "Call Fred!" 404.806.6833 or 404.520.0502

What is hosting?

Web sites must be put somewhere so the world can find them. Our sites are hosted in Canada at Tera-Byte.com. They have been very helpful and the favorable currency exchange allows me to pass on savings to my customers.

What is a Domain Name?

This is the word or words that identify your web site from the rest of the world. The actual web site is designated by a 32 bit number like 216.194.69.3. The cross reference file to these numbers is kept on a Domain Name Server. These servers keep great long lists of who is where. This allows us to use a name that means something, like fredricfinch.com when we really mean 216.194.69.3. Domain names must be registered to be usable. The registration process simply means that each domain name will point to only one specific place. – Your name to Your place!

What is a URL?

A Uniform Resource Link is the actual address of a directory, page or image on your website. The URL is the complete address, such as http://www.fredricfinch.com/index.html… The http means the type of protocol used to get the file, (HyperText Transfer Protocol) the www signifies World Wide Web, which is a very large group of computers tied together to form a network or web. The next is my domain name, which identifies where the file “index.html” resides. If the URL ends with a slash / and not a file, the default file for that directory will be loaded or an index shown.

What is HTML?

HyperText Markup Language is the language of choice for the internet. It is a text language, meaning that it can be written in a simple text editor or word processor.  There are strict rules for what can be included and how these files are written, so it is a lot easier to use a dedicated program like Microsoft® FrontPage® to setup web pages.

What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol is another protocol used on the internet which allows files of any type to be downloaded or uploaded to a website. Due to the type of server and the FrontPage extensions used, FTP can not be used to upload files to my server. I do have a dedicated FTP server that can be used for transferring large files. It requires a password, so you must notify me prior to using it.
